The Federal Trade Commission, the US government body that usually polices unfair business practices, last week did something unusual. It banned American companies and agencies from importing advanced robots made abroad, including humanoid robots (machines built to look and move like people), four-legged robots, and wheeled robots.

Cut off that supply and you slow the very research the ban is supposed to protect.
