KUKA plugs AI decision-making into a Jeep factory making 300 car bodies a day

A factory floor in Toledo, Ohio is now the testing ground for one of industrial robotics' bigger bets on artificial intelligence.

KUKA AG, the German robotics company, said this week it has switched on its new Automation Management Platform, known as AMP, inside KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO), a wholly owned subsidiary that builds car bodies for Stellantis. The news was first reported by The Robot Report.

What does AMP actually do?

AMP is software that sits between a factory's existing machines and newer AI tools, letting them share data and coordinate. Think of it as a translator: older factory equipment keeps running exactly as before, but now feeds information into a system that can spot patterns, flag problems and route tasks more efficiently.

Most factories generate enormous amounts of data every day. The trouble is that data has typically been locked inside separate machines that never talk to each other. AMP is designed to break down those walls.

"By continuously collecting and analyzing operational data, it creates a closed-loop system that can improve performance over time," said Marc Fleischmann, KUKA's chief software and AI officer.

KUKA announced AMP at the NVIDIA GTC 2026 conference. Its first focus is on AMRs, autonomous mobile robots, which are self-driving vehicles that carry parts around a factory floor without a human driver.

Why does this Ohio plant matter?

KTPC is not a small test lab. The 335,000-square-foot facility produces more than 300 vehicle bodies per day, roughly one every two minutes, and has turned out over 2 million bodies in total. It has stamped out the body-in-white, the bare metal frame before paint and trim, for every Jeep Wrangler sold anywhere in the world since 2006, and for the Jeep Gladiator since 2019.

The plant runs 285 robots and more than 60,000 connected devices. That scale makes it a credible stress test.

"KTPO is a familiar environment for us, so we can focus on evaluating the platform under realistic conditions," Fleischmann said. KUKA describes the current deployment as an alpha version, meaning it is still being refined.

What happens next?

KUKA says the goal is not to rip out existing equipment. Manufacturers have spent decades and billions building their current systems, and KUKA is pitching AMP as something that adds intelligence on top of what is already there.

The platform is built as an open, modular API system, meaning other companies' software and AI models can plug into it. KUKA wants customers to bring their own AI tools and run them inside AMP's shared data environment.

KUKA employs more than 3,400 people in the United States across engineering, manufacturing, software development and support roles. The company says the U.S. is a significant market and that AMP is being developed domestically.

For workers and plant managers watching this space: the near-term practical effect is better visibility into what machines are doing and faster responses when something goes wrong, not wholesale replacement of the people and equipment already on the floor.
