A year ago, Paul Conyngham posted on X about using ChatGPT and other AI tools to design a cancer treatment for his dog Rosie, a Staffordshire bull terrier-Shar Pei mix. Several of her tumours shrank. The internet loved it.
Now Conyngham has turned that story into a company.
What exactly is Gamgee offering?
Gamgee is building personalised mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs. An mRNA vaccine, the same basic technology used in some Covid-19 vaccines, gives cells a short set of instructions to train the immune system to attack a specific target, in this case a dog's particular tumour.
Conyngham, who openly states on the company website that he is "not a biologist," says AI and genetic analysis helped him tailor Rosie's treatment to her specific cancer. He credits that with adding years to her life. Gamgee wants to do that for other dogs at scale, and eventually for humans too.
The company is working with the University of Queensland and institutes at the University of New South Wales. It tells vets the process takes less than 20 minutes of their time, delivers a finished vaccine in roughly four weeks, and requires no changes to existing clinic routines. Pricing is not listed on the site.
Should pet owners be excited or cautious?
Cautious enthusiasm is the right call here. Gamgee's headline figure, around 75% tumour reduction, comes from one case: Rosie herself. The company acknowledges the timeline and outcomes may vary.
The deeper problem, reported earlier this year by The Verge, is that Rosie was given the mRNA vaccine alongside a separate therapy at the same time. When two treatments run together, there is no clean way to know which one worked, or whether the combination mattered. Researchers who looked at the case said the AI got too much of the credit, while the human scientists involved got too little.
That does not mean the approach is wrong. Personalised cancer vaccines are a real and active area of medical research for both animals and people. It means one dog's improvement is a long way from proof.
What happens next?
Gamgee has Y Combinator's stamp of approval, which carries real weight in the startup world. Clinical trials are recruiting in Australia. A waitlist is open globally, and Conyngham says the company is "accepting cases globally" already.
The longer goal is treatments for humans. For a company whose entire origin story rests on a single dog whose results cannot be cleanly attributed to its core product, that is a large leap. Whether the science catches up to the ambition is what the trials are for.
