OpenAI's new ChatGPT for Teens is here, with parent controls baked in

A tie-up with CodeAI aims to teach high schoolers how AI actually works, not just how to ask it for essay help.

Key points

  • OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot built for younger users with safety features and parental controls.
  • OpenAI is partnering with education nonprofit CodeAI on classroom programs, a Builders Challenge, a Career Journeys series, and a joint advisory council on child development.
  • Only 16% of high school leaders say all their students are learning about AI in class, according to figures cited by OpenAI.
  • A CodeAI survey found 75% of high school students believe understanding AI will matter more for their futures than it does today.
  • The two groups will run an Hour of AI event aimed at introducing millions of students to responsible AI use.

Most teenagers are already using AI chatbots. Their teachers, mostly, aren't teaching them how the things work.

That gap is what OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, says it wants to close with a new signature partnership with CodeAI, a nonprofit that runs free coding and AI courses in schools. The pair announced the deal alongside the launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a version of the chatbot built specifically for younger users. We first covered CodeAI on 20 August 2026, and our earlier look at the teen product itself ran on 18 August.

What is ChatGPT for Teens?

It's a safety-focused version of ChatGPT aimed at high schoolers. Think of it as the same chatbot your teenager already uses, but with guardrails: features that nudge healthy use, plus extra controls for parents to see and shape what their kid is doing.

OpenAI says the product is "designed with learning at the center", meaning it leans toward explaining and questioning rather than just spitting out answers. It builds on ChatGPT for Teachers, an earlier version aimed at educators, and OpenAI's ongoing work with the American Federation of Teachers.

A quick real-world picture: imagine your Year 10 daughter asks it to write her history essay on the Cold War. The teen version is meant to push back with questions, flag where its own answer might be wrong, and encourage her to check sources rather than hand over a tidy finished essay she can paste in.

That's the pitch, anyway. How well it holds up in practice is something parents will judge quickly.

Why partner with CodeAI?

Because a chatbot alone won't teach a kid how AI works. That's the argument from both sides.

CodeAI already runs AI Foundations, a free year-long high school course. Under the partnership, OpenAI's experts in AI systems, safety and responsible use will act as a resource the nonprofit can consult while developing the curriculum further.

Program What it does
Hour of AI A short intro session aimed at millions of students
Builders Challenge A national contest where teens build with AI and get OpenAI mentorship
Career Journeys Talks from OpenAI researchers about working with AI
Joint advisory council Experts in child development and learning science advising both groups

"Every student should know how AI actually works and be able to question the technology, catch its mistakes and know when to stop trusting it," said Karim Meghji, CEO of CodeAI, in the announcement.

What should parents actually do?

Start by checking whether your teen already has a regular ChatGPT account. The teen-specific product has different defaults, so moving them over, if OpenAI makes that straightforward, is worth doing.

OpenAI hasn't published full pricing details for ChatGPT for Teens, and it hasn't spelled out exactly what data it collects from teen accounts or how long it keeps it. That's the privacy catch worth watching. Chatbots learn from conversations, and teenagers overshare. Dig into the parental controls and the data settings together before handing it over.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT for Teens free?

OpenAI hasn't confirmed pricing in this announcement. Regular ChatGPT has a free tier and a paid Plus tier at $20 a month, and the teen product is likely to follow a similar shape, but wait for official details before assuming.

How is this different from just using regular ChatGPT?

The teen version has built-in safety features, parental controls and a design that leans toward teaching rather than just answering. Regular ChatGPT doesn't have those guardrails by default, which is why schools have been nervous about it.
