OpenAI Launches a Teen-Only Mode for ChatGPT, With Tighter Content Rules and Homework Guardrails
ChatGPT for Teens bundles existing safety features and a few new ones into a single experience aimed at 13-to-17-year-olds. What changes, and what stays the same.

Key points
- OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Teens on Tuesday, targeting users aged 13 to 17.
- The mode blocks graphic violence and sexual roleplay by default, and surfaces helpline information around eating disorders.
- Parents can set quiet hours and receive alerts when the system flags a safety concern, without seeing chat contents.
- A new "responsible homework reminder" detects when a teen appears to be skipping an assignment and redirects them to study mode.
- Much of what OpenAI calls new consolidates protections it has rolled out gradually over the past year.
OpenAI announced Tuesday that it's launching a dedicated chatbot experience for teenagers. ChatGPT for Teens applies automatically to accounts whose users say they're between 13 and 17, and to accounts the system estimates belong to someone under 18. Children under 13 aren't permitted to use ChatGPT at all.
The timing is notable. Our report on 13 August about a Massachusetts teenager accused of using ChatGPT to search for family-killing fantasies put the question of teen access under sharper public scrutiny than anything else this year.
What does Teen Mode actually do differently?
Several protections switch on by default that older users can turn off. Depictions of self-harm and sexual or romantic roleplay are blocked. When a conversation touches on eating disorders, the system surfaces warning messages and helpline information rather than engaging freely.
Parents get new controls. They can set quiet hours, a curfew for ChatGPT use, and receive notifications if the system flags a possible safety risk. Conversation contents aren't shared, just the alert.
The feature most likely to affect teens directly is the homework reminder. OpenAI says the system can detect when a teenager appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment, such as asking for a completed essay rather than help understanding the material, and steers them toward study mode instead. Families can also schedule study hours so that mode turns on automatically.
Is this actually new?
Partly. OpenAI itself acknowledges that many of these protections already existed.
Age-prediction tools, software that estimates a user's age from how they interact with the service, arrived at the start of 2025. Parental controls and study mode came roughly a year before Tuesday's announcement. More frequent break reminders were announced just last month. What this launch mostly does is pull those scattered features into one labelled package and add smaller touches: accent colour options, teen-specific setup screens, and voice variations.
That's not nothing. A consolidated, clearly labelled experience is easier for parents to trust than settings buried in menus. But this isn't a ground-up rebuild.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Content filters (self-harm, sexual roleplay) | Tightened and on by default |
| Parental controls and quiet hours | Existed before, now prominent |
| Study mode | Launched roughly a year ago |
| Age-prediction tools | Rolled out early 2025 |
| Homework reminder redirect | New with this launch |
| Break reminders | Added last month, now bundled in |
OpenAI told The Verge AI that its teen protections are "underpinned by ongoing safety research" and that it plans to share more of what it learns. The company framed the launch as a step toward a standard where teen access to AI comes with "protections that reflect their developmental stage."
What should parents do right now?
Check that your teenager's ChatGPT account reflects their real age. If it does, Teen Mode should apply automatically. Review the parental control settings to set quiet hours that match your household rules, and decide whether you want safety alerts turned on.
The safeguards apply only to ChatGPT itself, not to the underlying technology if accessed through third-party apps built on OpenAI's system.
Common questions
Does Teen Mode apply automatically?
Yes, if the account lists an age between 13 and 17, or if OpenAI's age-estimation software judges the user to be under 18.
Can teens turn off the content filters?
No. The blocked categories, self-harm depictions and sexual roleplay, are on by default and can't be disabled by the teen account holder.
