A robot that helps a surgeon cut and shape bone with precise, computer-guided movements may soon become a standard fixture in knee and shoulder operating rooms. Enovis Corp., a medical technology company based in Lewisville, Texas, announced this week that it has signed a binding offer to buy eCential Robotics, a French surgical robotics firm, for €155 million, just over $180 million at current exchange rates.

What does eCential's robot actually do?
eCential makes a modular surgical robotics platform, meaning different parts of the system can be swapped or upgraded without rebuilding the whole machine. Based in Gières, France, the company has spent more than 15 years developing computer-assisted tools for bone surgery, particularly spine and knee procedures.
The robot's arm offers seven degrees of freedom, which means it can rotate and bend in seven independent directions, far more than a standard industrial arm. That flexibility matters in surgery, where a robot needs to reach awkward angles around joints without bumping into the patient or the surgical team.
Earlier this year, surgeons at the Surgery Center of Hackensack began using eCential's system for robotic spine procedures. That real-world deployment matters: it means the technology is already cleared for use in patients, not just tested in a lab.
Why is Enovis buying rather than building?
Building a surgical robot from scratch takes a decade or more. Enovis wants one in two years.
Its CEO, Damien McDonald, was direct about the reasoning: the acquisition buys the company talent, intellectual property (the patents and technical know-how eCential owns), and a control software layer that Enovis can plug straight into its existing ASTRA platform. ASTRA is Enovis's current suite of digital tools and connected devices for orthopaedic surgery.
McDonald said the knee is the first target because the product requirements are already well understood and eCential's technology is validated there. The shoulder comes next, a market where Enovis already holds significant global share in total shoulder replacement surgery but where, McDonald argued, current robotic tools are still "suboptimal."
What does this mean for patients?
More precise bone cuts during joint replacement surgery can mean implants fit better, which can reduce pain and extend how long the replacement lasts. Robotic assistance does not replace the surgeon; it guides the cutting tool so the surgeon's hand movements stay within a pre-planned boundary.
If the timeline holds, patients having knee replacements could see this system in hospitals within roughly two years. Shoulder replacement patients would follow sometime after that.
Enovis will pay an upfront €176 million ($204.3 million) to eCential's shareholders at closing, with up to another €35 million ($40.6 million) tied to the company hitting agreed milestones. The deal is expected to complete before the end of 2026.
