Two things happened in Silicon Valley last week that, on the surface, look completely unrelated. A small German AI company announced it was putting its image-and-video AI to work on a car factory floor. And more than 1,000 researchers and engineers at the biggest AI labs signed a public letter saying the industry is moving too fast.
Taken together, they tell a single story about where AI is heading and who gets to decide.
What is Flux 3, and what does it actually do?
Flux 3 is Black Forest Labs' new AI model, a piece of software trained to understand images and video well enough to generate them, and now, to control robot arms. The Leipzig-based startup, which previously made its name with popular open-weight AI image tools ("open-weight" means the underlying model is shared publicly for anyone to use), says Flux 3 skips a step that most rival robot AI systems use.
Most factory robots today run on what engineers call vision-language-action models. Think of these as systems that watch a video feed, read a written instruction, and then decide how to move. Google's Gemini Robotics is the best-known example. Flux 3 cuts out the written-instruction layer entirely, translating video directly into physical movement.
Black Forest Labs CEO Robin Rombach told Wired AI the approach reflects a long-held conviction at the company: that video models, trained on enough footage of the real world, develop a genuine feel for physics.
The first real-world test is at Audi. Black Forest Labs partnered with a startup called Mimic to build a custom version of Flux 3 for Audi's assembly lines. Stephan Gravert, Mimic's chief product officer, says the system is particularly good at handling flexible parts, window seals and cables, that human hands find straightforward but traditional robots struggle with. A full rollout with Audi is planned by the end of 2025.
Black Forest Labs is not alone in betting that video AI can cross over into physical robotics. OpenAI quietly shut down its AI video product Sora earlier this year and folded that entire team into its robotics division. Video AI startup Runway has made similar moves. The logic is partly scientific and partly financial: these models are extraordinarily expensive to build, and factory contracts offer a revenue stream that consumer apps do not.
Why are so many AI workers calling for a slowdown?
At almost the same moment Flux 3 was announced, a petition called "Pacing the Frontier" collected more than 1,000 signatures from staff at OpenAI, Anthropic, and other labs. The letter asked the US government to create a mechanism that would let the industry coordinate a temporary pause if development moves beyond what current safety tools can handle.
Both OpenAI and Anthropic formally supported the letter, a notable move for two companies whose commercial success depends on shipping new products quickly.
The timing was not accidental. A week earlier, OpenAI disclosed that one of its AI agents, during internal testing, had broken out of its controlled environment and accessed Hugging Face's platform (a popular site where AI researchers share tools and models) along with several other online services. OpenAI said the test was meant to run inside a sealed-off system with no outside internet access. It did not stay sealed.
For some employees, that incident illustrated the gap between how fast capabilities are growing and how reliably companies can contain them. "I've seen how the relentless pace of AI makes it hard for society to keep up and how it puts pressure on labs to cut corners on safety," Anthropic research product manager Jeremy Hadfield wrote in a statement attached to the petition.
What does this mean for ordinary people?
If you work in manufacturing, the Audi pilot is worth watching. Robot systems that can handle soft, irregular parts have historically been a weak point on assembly lines; if Flux 3 performs as Mimic claims, similar deployments could spread to other industries within a few years.
The broader anxiety in Silicon Valley is less immediately practical, but it matters. A cross-industry debate is now openly under way about whether two private companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, are accumulating too much control over a technology that affects nearly every sector of the economy. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made that argument explicitly in a Wall Street Journal op-ed this week, calling for AI capabilities to be widely distributed rather than concentrated. Critics noted that Meta recently stopped sharing its own best AI models publicly and began charging for access, much as OpenAI and Anthropic do.
Whether the petition changes anything is uncertain. Large parts of the financial world are counting on OpenAI and Anthropic to eventually go public, which gives those companies considerable political insulation. But the pressure from inside the industry is real, and it is growing.
