Pack enough processors into a warehouse and they generate serious heat. To keep them from melting, operators run cooling towers, chillers, and humidification systems, all of which consume large volumes of water. On top of that, the electricity those buildings pull from the grid requires yet more water at the power stations producing it. The water bill, in other words, is enormous and largely invisible.
Now Britain's water industry has put that bill on the table. According to reporting first flagged by The Guardian AI, the water sector has told the UK government in plain terms: the country does not have enough water to meet the cooling demands of the datacentre expansion at the heart of its AI growth strategy. Industry representatives called the current plan "fatally flawed."
Should ordinary people be worried?
Not immediately, but the tension is real and worth tracking. Water scarcity in the UK is not a distant problem. Parts of England already face supply shortfalls during dry summers, and regulators have spent years urging households and businesses to cut consumption. Promising large areas of that same supply to server farms, without a clear plan for where the water comes from, is the core of the dispute.
For most people, the practical question is simpler: if water is rationed in a dry year, who gets priority? Homes, farms, hospitals, or datacentres running AI workloads? That hierarchy does not yet exist in UK policy.
The government has staked significant political capital on AI. Ministers have positioned datacentre investment as a pillar of economic growth, attracting billions in private spending. The water industry's objection does not argue against AI itself. It argues that physical reality, specifically supply of a finite natural resource, has been left out of the spreadsheet.
Datacentres can be built to use less water. Some operators use air cooling instead of water-based systems, or recycle water in closed loops. A handful of facilities in colder climates use outside air almost entirely. None of these approaches eliminates water use, and scaling them across the number of sites the UK government envisions would require engineering commitments that, so far, no policy document has mandated.
The government has not published a revised plan or a specific water allocation figure in response to the criticism. Until it does, the industry's warning sits unanswered.
