Spotify Lets You Talk to Its AI to Find Music, Check Your History, and Skip the Wait for Wrapped

Spotify wants you to stop scrolling and just ask.

The streaming platform is quietly rolling out "Talk to Spotify", a conversational AI chatbot built directly into its mobile app. Type into a text box or tap the microphone icon and speak. Think of it as texting a friend who has memorised every song you've ever played.

The feature sits on Spotify's Home screen and its Now Playing view, the screen that appears while a track is running. Ask it to "play some songs I haven't heard before" and it queues something up. Tell it to make things "more upbeat" and it adjusts on the spot. That back-and-forth is new. Prompted Playlist, the older tool that builds a queue from a short written description, couldn't respond to follow-up nudges.

What can it actually tell you about your own listening?

Quite a lot. The chatbot pulls from your personal listening data, so it can answer questions that previously only Wrapped, the year-in-review summary Spotify releases each December, could address. Ask what genres you've been gravitating toward this month and you get an answer now, not in December. The assistant handles general questions too. Ask whether a podcast guest has appeared on other shows, or explore other titles an author has written while you're listening to their audiobook. It behaves like typing into Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT, two of the most widely used AI chatbots available, except it stays inside Spotify and knows your account.

Spotify told The Verge AI the goal is to make the platform "more personal and useful for every listener." The company has faced long-running criticism that its recommendation algorithm serves up the same familiar tracks. This is one answer to that complaint.

The rollout is gradual. Right now it's a beta, an early unfinished version open to a limited group, for Premium subscribers aged 18 and over in the US, Ireland and Sweden, in English only. Spotify is upfront that "responses won't always be perfect."

For anyone who has spent years wishing Spotify could just read their mind, this is the closest it has come. Whether the conversation stays interesting past the novelty phase is the thing to watch.
