What is AI Overviews, and why does Reddit care?
AI Overviews pulls information from across the web and writes a short answer at the top of a Google results page. A user reads the summary and never clicks the original source. For Reddit, whose value depends on people actually visiting its threads, that's a direct hit to advertising revenue.
Huffman's argument is simple. Reddit is full of genuine human opinions and lived experience, exactly the kind of content AI summaries feed on. Google digests it, hands users a ready-made answer, and Reddit loses the visit and the ad impression that follows. AI Overviews now appear in nearly half of all searches, up from one in seven a year ago, which makes the exposure hard to dismiss.

Should ordinary Reddit users worry about this?
Not immediately. Over time, though, the pressure is real. A Reddit that struggles to attract traffic earns less, which means fewer resources to moderate communities or improve the product.
