Google reshuffles its AI leadership: Demis Hassabis moves to chief scientist, Jeff Dean departs

Google made its biggest AI leadership reshuffle in years on Wednesday, as first reported by The Verge AI. Three people who have shaped the company's AI ambitions for over a decade are at the centre of it.

Demis Hassabis, who co-founded the British AI research lab DeepMind before Google acquired it, steps into a new role as chief scientist of Alphabet, Google's parent company. He will also chair Google DeepMind but will no longer run its day-to-day operations. "I've always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health," Hassabis wrote in a message to staff. "It's time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer."

Who is now in charge of DeepMind?

Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over day-to-day leadership. Previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, he also holds the title of Google's chief AI architect, a role he keeps, and reports directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Hassabis said he will "continue to work closely with Sundar on strategic and global AGI matters", where AGI, or artificial general intelligence, refers to the long-term goal of building AI that can match human-level reasoning across many kinds of tasks. He will also advise Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leaders.

What is Jeff Dean doing next?

Dean is leaving Google entirely. As the company's 30th employee, he is widely credited with building the computing systems that made modern AI at Google possible.

Alongside him goes Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, an engineer who has worked with Dean for decades. Together they are co-founding Discovery Loop, structured as a public benefit corporation, a legal form that commits a company to a public goal alongside making profit. As we reported on 5 August 2026, Discovery Loop's ambition is to run automated experiments and out-invent the world's largest research labs. Google will act as a founding investor from day one.

The company's stated aim is to build AI systems that automatically solve hard problems in machine learning, science, and engineering, speeding up discovery in fields like medicine and materials science.

What does this mean for ordinary people?

Nothing changes in Google's products today. These are internal leadership shifts, not product announcements.

Longer term, the moves reveal where Google's most senior AI thinkers want their energy spent: drug discovery and scientific research.
