Apple Plans Paid Tiers for Heavy AI Users as Siri Overhaul Nears

Apple already limits how often you can use its AI features each day. Now it wants to charge you more if you want to use them more.
Speaking on an earnings call on Thursday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he expects people to use Apple Intelligence (the company's suite of AI tools built into iPhones and Macs) and the upcoming new Siri heavily. His words: "We will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud Plus where people can buy up the stack."
iCloud Plus is Apple's paid cloud storage subscription, which starts at a small monthly fee and already unlocks higher AI usage limits compared to free accounts. Cook's comments suggest Apple plans to add further tiers above that for power users.
What will the new Siri actually do?
The overhauled Siri arriving with iOS 27 this autumn is a significant step up from the assistant most iPhone owners know. It can look at whatever is on your screen and answer questions about it. It can take actions across different apps on your behalf, for example, pulling a flight number from an email and adding it to your calendar without you having to copy and paste anything.
Apple is also launching a dedicated Siri app that works like ChatGPT: you type or speak, and it responds in a conversational back-and-forth. That is a direct shift toward the kind of AI chatbot experience that tens of millions of people already use through OpenAI and Google.
Why does Apple limit AI use at all?
Because running these features is expensive. Apple confirmed in June 2026 that image generation and similar tools have daily caps because they depend on remote servers doing heavy computing work, rather than running entirely on your device. Every time you ask the AI to generate an image or process a complex request, Apple pays for that computing time.
The pay-more-for-more model is the same approach OpenAI uses with ChatGPT Plus and Anthropic uses with Claude Pro: a free or basic tier with caps, and paid tiers for users who need more.
For most iPhone owners, the free or existing iCloud Plus limits will probably be plenty. If you find yourself hitting a wall when generating images or asking Siri to handle complex multi-step tasks, a paid upgrade tier could become worth considering once Apple announces actual prices this autumn.
Apple has not yet said how much the new tiers will cost or exactly when they go live, first reported by The Verge AI. Given the services division brought in $30.74 billion last quarter, Apple has every financial reason to get this right.
