XAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, has launched Grok Bot: software agents, meaning programs that carry out long, multi-step tasks on their own, that behave less like a chatbot and more like a junior employee you can assign work to and forget about until it's done.

The agents live in a shared cloud environment (remote computers hosted on the internet, not your own machine) and can sign into apps and tools you already use. Send one a message saying "follow up on all unanswered sales emails from last week" and it goes off, does it, and comes back only if it hits a decision it can't make alone.

How does it actually work?

You message a Grok Bot the way you'd text a colleague, no complex setup required and no workflows to build first. Several bots can run simultaneously on the same project. One acts as coordinator, handing subtasks to others, and bots can message each other directly to share context when work overlaps. XAI also describes a group-chat mode where multiple agents divide ownership of a task among themselves.

Over time, the bots are designed to learn how you prefer to work, preserving what xAI calls your "personal voice," and to become more proactive, picking up work before you explicitly ask.
