One billion people. Every month. That is the number Google CEO Sundar Pichai put on the Gemini app this week, announcing the milestone on X and calling it one of the company's fastest-growing products ever.
To put that in context: Google has been building products since 1998. Only 13 of them, things like Search, Gmail, YouTube and Maps, had ever crossed the billion-user mark before Gemini did it.
How does that compare with ChatGPT?
Gemini is now level with its biggest rival. OpenAI's ChatGPT, the chatbot that kicked off the current wave of public interest in AI assistants, reached 1 billion monthly users in June 2026. Gemini crossed the same line just weeks later.
Neither product existed in its current form three years ago. That pace of adoption is something the internet has rarely seen.
What are people actually doing with Gemini?
Most users are talking to it, literally. Google says 63% of Gemini users use the voice feature, speaking their questions aloud rather than typing them. That is a striking figure. It suggests the app is landing less like a search box and more like a hands-free assistant people reach for while cooking, driving or working.
The image-generation numbers are just as eye-catching. Gemini produces more than 150 million AI-generated images every single day.
The milestone covers only the standalone Gemini app. Google's AI Mode inside Search, which lets users ask complex questions and get AI-written answers, separately counts over 1 billion monthly users of its own. Today's announcement does not include those people.
Gemini also now has more than 100 million active users on Apple's iPhone, an important figure because iPhones run Apple's own software and Google cannot push its apps there the way it can on Android phones.
What is changing for ordinary users?
Google is rolling out a new model called Gemini 3.5 Flash. Think of a "model" as the engine under the bonnet of an AI assistant: a newer model generally means faster, smarter answers. This particular version focuses on two things: helping with coding (writing or fixing computer programs) and handling AI agent tasks, meaning jobs where the AI takes a sequence of steps on its own, such as booking something, filling in a form, or researching a topic and summarising it, without the user having to prompt it at each step.
For most everyday users that probably means quicker, more reliable answers. For developers building software, it means a faster coding assistant.
Google is also expected to show more Gemini features at its upcoming Made by Google event, where new Pixel phones and devices are typically announced.
At its Q2 2026 earnings call, held just before this announcement, Google reported 950 million monthly Gemini users, with daily active users tripling over the past year. The jump from 950 million to 1 billion, confirmed by Pichai this week and first reported by TechCrunch AI, happened in a matter of weeks.
