Key points

  • Google added flight price tracking, hotel booking, and reward-points search to AI Mode, announced Thursday.
  • Flight price alerts work in more than 180 countries, pulling live prices from over 300 airlines and travel sites.
  • Hotel booking is rolling out in the United States in English, with partners including Marriott, Hilton, Expedia, Booking.com and several others.
  • Points and miles searches are available globally, covering both flights and hotels.

Google's AI Mode, the conversational search experience that lets you type or speak questions and get a flowing, chat-like answer, just got a meaningful upgrade for anyone who books travel. The company announced Thursday that it can now track flight prices, help complete hotel bookings, and show how many reward points a trip would cost. Taken together, these additions push it from a research tool into something closer to an actual booking assistant.

What can it actually do?

Three new capabilities, and they work the way a conversation would. Describe where and when you want to fly, and AI Mode surfaces current prices from more than 300 airlines and booking sites. Ready to commit? Build your itinerary right there. Want to wait on a better deal? Tell it to track the price, and Google emails you when it drops. That alert works in more than 180 countries.

For hotels, describe your trip and preferences, and the tool returns options with reviews and details like cancellation policies. Pick one, tap "Continue on Google," choose your room, and pay through Google Pay. The hotel or booking platform handles the reservation and any post-booking customer service, so your cancellation rights sit with them, not Google. Remember that if something goes wrong: the hotel's front desk is your first call.

Partners at launch include Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

What about frequent-flyer points?

This is the feature frequent travellers will notice most. Ask something like "I want to fly Atlanta to Miami using my AA miles, nonstop, October 9 to 12" and you'll see exactly how many miles that trip costs. It works globally for both flights and hotels.

Should you worry about who's responsible for your booking?

Not exactly, but know what you're signing up for. Google isn't the merchant here. The moment you complete a hotel reservation through AI Mode, you have a contract with the hotel or booking platform, not with Google. That matters most if a cancellation gets complicated or a room isn't what was advertised.

Price alerts in particular have existed on Google Flights for years. Bringing them into a conversational interface lowers the barrier for people who find traditional search results fiddly, which is a genuine improvement for casual travellers rather than just power users.

We first covered Google building booking functionality into its AI tools on 6 August, when Maps gained the ability to book hotels and order food. Thursday's announcement extends that same logic to AI Mode.

First reported by TechCrunch AI, the changes are rolling out now.
