Gemini Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users, But ChatGPT Got There First
Google's AI assistant is now the second chatbot to reach the billion-user mark. The AI audience race is over. The money race is just starting.

Key points
- Google Gemini reached 1 billion monthly active users as of last week, confirmed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on August 2025.
- OpenAI's ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users before Gemini, announcing the milestone on August 6th after external data suggested it happened as early as June.
- Gemini grew from 750 million monthly users in February 2025 to 1 billion in roughly six months, which Google calls its fastest product growth ever.
- More than 100 million Gemini users are on Apple's iOS, meaning the large majority of Gemini's billion users are on Android phones.
- Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, does not publish user figures; independent estimates put Claude's monthly users in the tens of millions.
Two AI chatbots have now crossed a billion monthly users. Google's Gemini got there second, but it got there fast.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, calling Gemini Google's fastest-growing product in the company's history. That is a striking claim from a company whose previous thirteen products to hit a billion users include Search, Gmail, YouTube and Android.
Did ChatGPT get there first?
Yes. OpenAI's ChatGPT, the chatbot that most people think of when they hear the words "AI assistant", quietly confirmed it had passed a billion monthly users in a blog post on August 6th. The company did not make much of it. External tracking data, reported first by The Verge AI, suggested ChatGPT crossed that line as early as June.
For some context on what these numbers mean, ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users, meaning people who open it at least once a week, back in February 2025. Reaching 1 billion weekly users by July took five months. That is still growth, but it is slower growth than the explosive early years when ChatGPT was routinely called the fastest-growing software application ever made.
OpenAI has not said how many monthly users ChatGPT has. Google's figures, by contrast, are monthly.
| Platform | Feb 2025 users | Latest users | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 900 million (weekly) | 1 billion+ (weekly, July) | Weekly active users |
| Gemini | 750 million (monthly) | 1 billion (monthly, Aug) | Monthly active users |
| Claude | Not disclosed | Tens of millions (est.) | Third-party estimates |
Comparing weekly and monthly figures is genuinely tricky. A monthly user only needs to open an app once in 30 days; a weekly user opens it at least once every seven days. Weekly active users is the stricter measure. By that logic, ChatGPT is almost certainly the larger platform right now.
What does this actually mean for ordinary users?
For most people, nothing changes today. You will not wake up to a better chatbot because it has more users.
What the numbers do signal is staying power. Both products have cleared a threshold that most apps never approach. That means neither company is going anywhere, and both will keep spending heavily to keep you coming back.
One detail worth knowing: the vast majority of Gemini's billion users appear to come from Android phones, where Gemini comes pre-installed. Google confirmed that more than 100 million Gemini users are on Apple iPhones, which means well over 900 million are on Android. Pre-installation gives Google a structural advantage that OpenAI cannot easily copy, which is part of why OpenAI has signalled interest in building its own hardware devices.
Anthropic's Claude sits in a different position entirely. The company does not publish user numbers, and independent estimates place it in the tens of millions, far behind the two leaders. Claude Code, a version of Claude aimed at software developers, has grown quickly this year and pressured OpenAI to accelerate its own coding tools.
What happens next?
The audience race is effectively settled. A billion users is a ceiling of sorts: there are only around 5 billion smartphone users on the planet.
The harder race now is revenue. Getting people to open a chatbot is one thing. Getting them to pay for it, or to use it in ways that justify the enormous cost of running these systems, is another entirely. Neither Google nor OpenAI has yet shown that a billion casual users translates into a billion dollars of sustainable profit.
That is the number worth watching.
Honest takeaway: If you already use one of these tools at work or at home, you have made a reasonable choice either way. The platforms are close enough in quality that switching costs matter more than loyalty. Try the free tier of whichever one you have not used, spend a week with it, and keep the one that saves you the most time.
