OpenAI's most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, is landing for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but not where you'd expect

Astra is appearing in the Work section of ChatGPT first, not the usual chat window. Here's what that means for people paying $20 a month.

Key points

  • OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model to date, to ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) starting mid-2025.
  • Astra arrives inside ChatGPT Work first, not the standard chat interface most Plus users open by default.
  • Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium subscribers already have Astra in ChatGPT Work, Codex (OpenAI's dedicated coding tool), and the developer API.
  • Astra usage counts against existing subscription limits with no extra fee; free users remain on older models.
  • OpenAI has not said whether free-tier users will ever receive Astra.

If you pay for ChatGPT Plus and went looking for the new model this week, you may have come up empty. GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's newest flagship, is not in the familiar chat window yet. As first reported by BleepingComputer, it's landing inside ChatGPT Work, the office-tasks section of the product, before it reaches the standard model picker.

If you have a Plus account and want to try Astra now: open ChatGPT, find the Work tab, and look there.

What is GPT-6 Astra, and why does it matter?

Astra is OpenAI's new top-tier model, meaning the most capable one the company currently offers. A model is the underlying software that reads your message and writes the answer. This one is built for long, complex jobs: web browsing on your behalf, code work, scientific reasoning, and cybersecurity tasks.

OpenAI says Astra retains context across lengthy conversations better than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol. Where Sol suited a quick question, Astra is pitched at a two-hour task. When we first covered the launch on 3 September, GPT-6 Astra could already hack well-defended computer systems without human help, and OpenAI's president suggested we may have entered the age of artificial general intelligence.

Who gets it, and when?

Higher-tier accounts got Astra first. Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium subscribers already have it in ChatGPT Work, in Codex, and through the developer API.

Plus and standard Business subscribers are next. OpenAI wrote on X that the rollout "might take a few days."

Plan Astra available? Where
Pro / Enterprise / Business Premium Yes ChatGPT Work, Codex, API
Plus ($20/month) Rolling out now ChatGPT Work first
Business Rolling out within days ChatGPT Work
Free Not announced Still on GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5

Free users are not part of this rollout. OpenAI hasn't said whether Astra will reach the free tier, or in what form.

Does Astra cost extra?

No. For paying subscribers, Astra sits inside existing subscription limits. Burn through your allowance and you can buy additional credits, but there's no new plan required.

What should workplace users watch out for?

The Work-first rollout has a practical edge that's easy to miss. Staff at companies on a Plus subscription may quietly gain a more powerful assistant before their IT team is aware of it.

A stronger model invites bigger, messier tasks. Bigger tasks pull in more sensitive material: client data, financial figures, internal reports. The rules your employer has about what employees paste into ChatGPT didn't change this week. The engine just got an upgrade.
