Where did Caterpillar's AI story actually start?

It started underground. Years before generative AI became a buzzword, Caterpillar was automating haul trucks and drilling rigs in mines, where labour shortages and dangerous conditions made the case easy. Those machines now operate with minimal human input, guided by software command centres that track whole fleets at once.

Mineart told the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas this month that the company is now taking what it learned in mines into construction sites, quarries and other messier, less predictable environments.

Mineart is candid: some machine operators will stop controlling one vehicle and start overseeing several from a remote command centre. That is a real shift in skill, responsibility and daily routine.

The $100 million training budget exists because Caterpillar knows the technology alone is not enough. Processes, habits and workflows all have to change around it. That is the harder problem.
