Apple wants to prove your iPhone photo is real with a new hardware-level authentication feature

What is Apple's Reference Image feature, exactly?
It is a way to prove a photo came straight from a camera and was not touched by AI. When you switch the iPhone 18 Pro camera into a new mode called Reference mode, the sensor signs the raw data it captures, essentially attaching a unique digital fingerprint to every pixel before any editing can happen.
Apple then sends that signed data to its Private Cloud Compute, a system where processing happens on Apple's servers without Apple itself being able to read the content. The result is a locked reference image stored in your Photos app. If someone later edits the photo and you want to check, you can compare the two versions side by side.

Why does this matter right now?
Because telling a real photo from a generated one is getting harder. AI image tools can now produce scenes that look like genuine photographs, and that has obvious consequences for news, courts, and everyday trust online.
Several industry standards already try to tackle this. SynthID, developed by Google DeepMind, embeds invisible watermarks into AI-generated content. C2PA, short for Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is an open technical standard that attaches a tamper-evident record of how an image was made and edited. Meta uses a similar approach it calls Content Seal. All of these tag images after the fact, or label AI-made content as such.
Apple is taking a different route. Rather than labelling AI output, it is certifying camera output at the point the shutter fires. Authentication baked into hardware is harder to fake than a tag added later in software.
Who can use it, and when?
The feature arrives with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this month. It requires the new camera sensor those phones carry, so older iPhones will not get it.
Developers building photo or journalism apps can apply for access to the Reference Image API, which will let their apps display and verify these signed photos. That opens the door for news outlets, legal professionals, or anyone else with a reason to verify image authenticity.
One catch: buyers in the European Union will not get Reference Image at launch. Apple has not explained why, though the EU's Digital Markets Act has previously complicated Apple feature rollouts in the region. EU users will be able to view and develop reference images once iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 arrive.
For everyone else, the practical upshot is simple. If you take a photo with an iPhone 18 Pro in Reference mode, you will have a way to show, later and credibly, that the image is genuine.
