There Are Only 2,000 Engineers in America Who Can Actually Make AI Pay Off
A new study says demand for the specialists who plug AI into real business workflows is about to surge by 2,100 percent. The problem: there aren't nearly enough of them.

Companies have spent years buying AI tools. Now Wall Street wants to see the receipts.
That shift is creating a desperate scramble for a very specific type of engineer called a forward-deployed engineer, or FDE. The name sounds technical, but the job is straightforward: an FDE goes inside a client company and builds the plumbing that connects AI to actual business tasks, whether that means automating document processing, speeding up sales, or rebuilding financial forecasting from scratch.
The trouble is that almost no one can do this job well.
How scarce is this talent?
Very. Christian & Timbers, a specialist executive search firm, estimates there are roughly 17,000 FDEs working in the United States today. But the study, first reported by TechCrunch, puts the number who are genuinely capable of delivering results measured in "multiple tens of millions of dollars" of impact at just 2,000. Not 2,000 available. Two thousand in total.
To put that in context: the largest consulting firms are now saying they need to grow their FDE teams tenfold, building groups of 20 to 100 people. A significant share of the existing talent pool already works at Palantir, the data-analytics company that invented the FDE model years ago. Jeff Christian, the firm's founder, says some clients are buying Palantir's software purely to get access to its engineers.
"This is all happening at a speed I've never seen," Christian said. "Enterprises are hiring in the middle of summer."

Why does this matter to ordinary people?
Because the companies most likely to employ you, insure you, or manage your money are racing to wire AI into their operations, and the engineers doing that wiring will decide what gets automated and what doesn't.
Christian warned that this autumn, public companies face a reckoning. Investors who have watched AI budgets swell for two years with little visible return are expected to start rewarding firms that show results and punishing those that cannot. The FDE is, in effect, the person whose job is to make sure the spending was worth it.
That pressure is also why OpenAI and Anthropic, the two best-known AI lab companies, have each set up dedicated teams of forward-deployed engineers. OpenAI created a unit called the Deployment Company; Anthropic launched a services firm called Ode with Anthropic. Both exist to embed their technology directly inside enterprise clients.
Many bigger companies are choosing to build their own internal FDE teams rather than rely on outside firms, partly to protect their proprietary business processes from the very AI companies trying to help them.
"Everybody's concerned that if they give up their proprietary business processes, the AI firms can compete with them," Christian said.
What happens next?
The boom may be short-lived. Christian believes demand for FDEs could shift toward physical AI, meaning humanoid robots and automated machinery, as that sector matures. Within five to ten years, he thinks the FDE role could largely disappear as AI agents begin automating the work that today requires a human specialist.
For now, if you know how to make AI deliver a measurable result inside a real company, you are sitting on one of the rarest skill sets in the industry.
