Reliance Jio opens its cloud PC service to all Indian internet users

Should Indian PC users take this seriously?

JioPC requires a stable internet line at all times. Cut the connection and your work stops, unlike a conventional PC, which keeps running offline. That matters most in smaller cities and towns, where affordable computing has the biggest potential audience but connectivity is less reliable.
Refurbished PCs offer a real alternative. Bharath Shenoy, a senior market analyst at IDC, first reported by TechCrunch, told the publication that secondhand machines let buyers own hardware outright, with no monthly bill and no dependence on a signal.
There is also a question about the "AI-ready" label Jio applies to the service. The company has not disclosed whether its servers carry the dedicated AI accelerator chips that define the new generation of AI PCs, chips designed to run generative AI, the technology behind tools like ChatGPT, directly on the device.
What happens next?
Prabhu Ram of the analyst firm CyberMedia Research argues JioPC will not replace conventional PCs. Instead, it could build a parallel, price-sensitive tier for students and households for whom buying a new machine was never realistic.
The real test, Ram says, is whether users come to see cloud computing as a daily utility rather than a workaround. Indians have traditionally preferred owning their hardware, and Jio must convince them that a recurring subscription is worth what they give up.
With 65 million PCs already in use across India and replacement cycles lengthening, the pool of people with ageing machines is growing. Whether they subscribe to Jio's cloud or keep limping along with what they have is a question the market will answer over the next year or two.
