Microsoft is set to launch a new AI-based cybersecurity service, Project Perception, on 3 August 2023. As first reported by ThreatVectr, this service uses artificial intelligence to automate many tasks traditionally handled by human security analysts. By doing so, it aims to speed up the process of identifying and fixing software vulnerabilities.

How does Project Perception work?

Project Perception links multiple AI agents, each designed for a distinct security task. When new threats are reported, these agents work together: one set scans for potential vulnerabilities, another acts as an attacker to test these weak spots, and a third writes the necessary code fixes, known as patches. The system can even apply these fixes directly to a company's software codebase. This means organizations can respond to new threats in minutes rather than hours.

Microsoft's MAI-Cyber-1-Flash model, customized for cybersecurity, works alongside the larger GPT 5.4 model. Together, they scored 96% on a test called CyberGym, which measures AI's ability to solve real-world security issues. This score is 12 points higher than a competing model from Anthropic, named Mythos 5, and at a lower cost.
