Google Assistant, the voice helper that has lived on Android phones since 2016, is getting the plug pulled. Google sent an email to users this week announcing that it will begin removing Assistant from phones, tablets, and paired devices on September 4, 2025. The Verge AI first reported the announcement.
Once the change reaches your device, you cannot switch back. Google's email is direct: "Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet or paired devices."
What exactly stops working?
Phones and tablets go first. Wear OS smartwatches, the Android-based watches made by Google and partners like Samsung, will also lose Assistant. So will Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, and cars running Android Auto, the system that mirrors your phone on a car screen.
A few places get a reprieve. Cars with Google Built-in, where the assistant software runs inside the car itself rather than from a phone, keep Assistant for now. Google Home smart speakers and Google TV streaming devices are also unaffected by this announcement.
What takes its place?
Gemini steps in automatically. Gemini is Google's newer AI assistant, the technology behind conversational tools similar to ChatGPT, and Google has been pushing it as a direct upgrade to the older, more rule-based Assistant.
The catch: Gemini is not available everywhere, and not every device meets its minimum hardware requirements. Google's email says users in supported regions with compatible devices will be moved over. What happens to everyone else is not yet spelled out.

Google had originally planned to wind down Assistant on most mobile devices at some point in 2025, then quietly pushed the deadline out. That delay is now over.
What should you do before September 4?
Check whether your phone supports Gemini. Open your phone's settings, search for "Gemini" or "Digital Wellbeing," and see whether the app is already present or available to install. If your device is several years old or runs an older version of Android, it may not qualify, and you should look into what Google offers as an alternative before the deadline.
If you use Assistant through a smartwatch or car, expect a gap in functionality. Some features Assistant handles today, like setting reminders hands-free or controlling smart home devices by voice, may work differently or need re-setup inside Gemini.
The switchover takes a few weeks to roll out fully, so not everyone will notice a change on September 4 exactly. But by the end of the month, Assistant on mobile should be history.
