Elon Musk once described Grokipedia as a "massive improvement" over Wikipedia. Right now it's looking more like a very large, very dusty library where nobody has touched a book in months.
The site, built by Musk's AI company xAI, is an online encyclopedia filled with articles written by AI, the technology behind chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. It launched its first version in October 2024 with 885,000 articles and later grew to more than 6,000,000 entries with a second release in November 2024. That sounds impressive. The problem, first reported by The Verge, is that nothing appears to have changed since 24 April.
What exactly stopped working?
Nothing is updating. Lawfare, a legal-news publication that dug into the site, checked both popular pages and obscure ones and found the same result across all of them.
Grokipedia's own website has a section called "Recent changes" which currently displays: "No live edits available right now." Users can still submit suggestions and flag corrections, but Lawfare's analysis of 34,519 pages found not a single correction had been accepted or rejected in more than three months. That's a lot of waiting for nothing.
XAI didn't reply to requests for comment. It's worth noting that we covered xAI's legal disputes in Minnesota just two weeks ago in our 29 July report, so the company has had other fires to manage.
