Is AI news reliable?
AI news is as reliable as the process behind it, no more and no less. Automation can produce careless slop or consistent, well-sourced reporting; the deciding factors are where the facts come from, what checks run before publish, and whether mistakes get corrected in the open. Judge the process, not the tool.
That standard is the same one that has always separated good outlets from bad ones. A human newsroom with no sourcing discipline prints rumours; an automated newsroom with strong discipline can be more consistent than a tired reporter on deadline, because process does not have bad days. The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report finds audiences are more comfortable with AI in news when humans stay in charge of standards and the outlet says clearly how it works. That is the right instinct: transparency is the test.
What is AI news?

How can you tell if news is AI generated?
You often cannot tell from the prose alone, and detectors are unreliable, so look at behaviour instead: does the outlet name sources, link originals, publish corrections and disclose its methods? Absence of those signals matters far more than writing style.
The stylistic tells people swap online (certain phrases, uniform rhythm, a fondness for particular punctuation) are weak evidence, because good automated pipelines edit them out and plenty of human writers trip the same alarms. AI-detection tools score poorly in independent testing and misfire on non-native English writers especially. The reliable signals are structural. A trustworthy outlet, automated or not, shows its sourcing on every story, keeps a corrections trail, discloses how it works, and does not hide ownership. An untrustworthy one, automated or not, has none of that, no matter how human its prose sounds. As for AI detecting fake news: the same limits apply, so treat any single detector verdict, positive or negative, as a hint rather than proof.
Are AI news websites safe to read?
Reading an AI news site carries the same two risks as any website: bad information and bad web practices. Check the information signals above for the first, and the ordinary web signals (https, clear ownership, no forced sign-ups, sane ads) for the second.

Why does AI news exist at all?
Because the AI beat moves faster than any human desk can cover alone, and because automation makes consistent, around-the-clock coverage affordable. Done openly and checked properly, it widens access to news; done lazily, it produces slop. The difference is process.
Can AI detect fake news?
Only partially. Automated systems catch known false claims and suspicious patterns at scale, but they misfire often enough that no serious outlet or reader should rely on a detector verdict alone. Cross-checking against named primary sources remains the dependable test.
