Key points

  • OpenAI is bringing ads inside ChatGPT for free and Go-tier users in India.
  • The rollout starts with 50 brands and involves partnerships with advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom.
  • A self-serve ad manager, where businesses can run their own campaigns, arrives next month with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 (about $7.60).
  • OpenAI recorded $6.7 billion in revenue for the second quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion the previous quarter.
  • OpenAI said in February 2026 that it has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users in India.

If you use ChatGPT in India without paying for a premium plan, ads are coming. OpenAI confirmed this week it's bringing sponsored placements to its free and Go subscription tiers there. The Go plan, launched at under $5 a month in August 2025, sits below the paid Plus and Pro plans that still carry no ads.

What will the ads actually look like?

OpenAI hasn't published screenshots, but says ads will appear when users are weighing a decision. Ask ChatGPT where to buy running shoes and a brand may surface in the answer. The rollout begins with 50 brands, backed by two of the world's biggest ad groups, WPP and Omnicom. Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, said the goal is for "businesses of every size" to reach users "at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape."

Next month, an ad manager opens: a self-service dashboard where any marketer can build a campaign, provided they commit to at least ₹725 (roughly $7.60) per day.

Why India first?

India is OpenAI's biggest single-country audience. The company counted more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users there as of February 2026, a large share of whom are on the free or Go tiers.

OpenAI spent heavily to build that base: the discounted Go plan, a promotion that made the tier free for a full year, cricket sponsorships during the Women's Premier League and the Indian Premier League, and the recent hire of Uber India's former chief to lead expansion. Our 20 August story on how Perplexity's year of free AI played out for 360 million Indians is worth reading alongside this one, since it offers the clearest data yet on whether giveaways convert to paying customers.

Ads followed a similar path elsewhere. The US came first, in February 2026. We covered the European rollout on 20 August, when free and Go users across 31 countries including Germany, France and Italy began seeing placements.

Why is OpenAI doing this now?

Money, plainly. OpenAI's preparing for a potential IPO (the process of selling shares to the public for the first time), expected this year or next. Investors want predictable, growing revenue before that happens, and ads let the company earn from the hundreds of millions of users who've never paid a cent.

The numbers are moving fast: $6.7 billion in revenue in the quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion the quarter before, according to The Wall Street Journal. A late-2025 report in The Information said OpenAI was targeting 220 million paying subscribers by 2030; at that point it had 35 million on Plus and Pro plans.

What does this mean for users?

Free and Go users in India will see ads. Upgrading to Plus or Pro is the only stated way out. Paid users on those tiers appear unaffected for now, though it's worth watching whether that boundary holds as OpenAI pushes toward its IPO.
