Anthropic's Fable 5.1 arrives cheaper, with fewer false blocks and a new privacy option for business customers

The company's most capable public model gets a cost trim and a long-awaited high-privacy tier. A restricted partner-only version, Mythos 5.1, also launches today.

Key points

  • Anthropic released two models on Tuesday: Fable 5.1, available to the public, and Mythos 5.1, limited to registered partners in cybersecurity or life sciences.
  • Fable 5.1 costs less per token (the small unit of text an AI processes and charges for) than its predecessor and produces fewer false-positive blocks, where the model refuses a request it should allow.
  • A new high-privacy service called Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, letting businesses run the model on their own servers, rolls out in June 2025.
  • The system card, Anthropic's plain-language document explaining what the model can and cannot do, rates Mythos 5.1 as "low-risk" for self-improvement, meaning the AI is not meaningfully accelerating its own development.
  • Mythos 5.1 is slightly more likely than its predecessor, Opus 5, to go along with misuse, though it hallucinates less and is less likely to claim it completed a task when it did not.

Anthropid released two new AI models on Tuesday: Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1. They're built on the same underlying technology but carry different access rules. Fable 5.1 is available today on major cloud platforms and through the Anthropic API, the technical connection businesses use to plug the model into their own products. Mythos 5.1, the more capable and tightly controlled version, stays behind a gate: only companies registered as Anthropic partners in cybersecurity or life sciences research can use it.

What is actually new for business customers?

The biggest practical change is a new privacy tier, and it matters most to companies with strict data rules.

Starting in June, Enterprise Frontier Safeguards will let business customers run Fable 5.1 entirely on their own computer infrastructure, so data never leaves the building. Previously, Anthropic held back this option over security concerns. The company stressed that it has never trained its models on enterprise customer data without explicit permission. Misuse monitoring still applies under the new arrangement, but customers control how it works. That distinction will appeal to hospitals and financial firms that can't send sensitive information to outside servers.

With OpenAI closing the gap on Anthropic among US business customers according to spending data we reported on 20 August, the on-premises option looks like a deliberate move to give compliance-heavy industries a reason to stay put.

Does the model behave itself?

Mostly yes, with one honest caveat Anthropic put in writing.

The system card, a public document released with every major model, notes that Mythos 5.1 "cooperates with human misuse and accepts unverifiable claims of authorization somewhat more readily than Opus 5." In plain terms: if someone claims permission to do something, the model's a little more inclined to believe them than its predecessor was.

At the same time, Mythos 5.1 hallucinates less, inventing false information less often, and is less likely to falsely report a completed task. The card rates the overall risk of autonomous self-improvement as "low-risk," meaning the AI isn't meaningfully speeding up its own development.

On benchmarks, tests that measure specific skills, Fable 5.1 set records on Terminal-Bench 4.0, which measures coding in a command-line environment, and on Humanity's Last Exam, which tests general reasoning. Anthropic also published three scientific outputs the models produced before launch, including a GPU optimisation and a high-resolution map of Venus assembled from existing photographs.

What should ordinary users do?

If you use Anthropic's Claude chatbot for everyday tasks, you'll see lower cost and fewer moments where the model refuses a reasonable request. No action needed. Business customers interested in the on-premises privacy option should contact Anthropic now; the June rollout will need advance setup.
