SimpliSafe, the DIY home-security company, is extending its proactive monitoring service to the front door with a new video doorbell that ships today.

The Video Doorbell Series 2 costs $199.99. It records in 2K resolution, a sharper picture than most standard HD cameras, with a 150-degree head-to-toe view and 10x zoom. Two-way audio and a built-in siren come standard. Dual-band Wi-Fi is supported, and the camera can capture up to five seconds of footage before an event triggers, so you see what led up to a knock or a delivery.

What does the live-agent feature actually do?

When the camera detects something suspicious, a SimpliSafe monitoring agent, a real person at a call centre, can drop into the live feed, speak through the doorbell's speaker, and try to deter whoever is there. It's a security guard who lives in your doorbell.

The system combines AI running on the camera itself, cloud-based computer vision (software that analyses images on remote servers) and facial recognition to decide what counts as suspicious.
