Meet the Robot Bricklayer That Learned the Hard Way About Black Bricks

A construction site in the Netherlands has a robot arm picking up bricks, reading their corners, and pressing them into place while a second arm squeezes out mortar. No human bricklayer in sight.
That is Pisa, the lead robot built by Monumental, a startup making the case that robots belong on building sites right now, not in a decade.
Why bricklaying?
Bricklaying is the single hardest construction task to automate, which is exactly why Monumental started there. If the team can solve it, the thinking goes, almost everything else gets easier.
Salar al Khafaji, Monumental's founder and CEO, told The Robot Report that the labor picture makes the case plainly. Bricklayers are the top job-shortage category in the U.K., the Netherlands and Germany. In the U.S., the Association of General Contractors says 92% of contractors cannot fill open roles. The country is simultaneously short 4.5 million homes.
"It's literally there's not enough people to do the work," al Khafaji said. "We desperately need this technology."
How the three robots actually work
Pisa is the main act. It has two arms mounted like tiny tower cranes on a non-humanoid, meaning non-human-shaped, body. One arm picks up bricks and places them. The other pushes mortar into the joints. Two companion robots keep Pisa supplied: Petra hauls bricks to the work area, and Panama keeps the mortar flowing.
All three machines share the same underlying platform, which means adding more robots to a site later is straightforward.
A mushroom-shaped device called Pathion sits on each site, stitching together 4G, 5G and Wi-Fi connections so the robots can communicate reliably. Construction sites are not office buildings; connectivity is not guaranteed.
What surprised the team in the field
Monumental made a deliberate call to get robots onto real sites in its first year, rather than perfecting them in a lab.
That decision paid off quickly, and uncomfortably. Weeks before one early deployment, the team learned the bricks on that particular job were pitch black. Their computer vision system, the software that lets the robot see, identify and measure each brick, had been trained almost entirely on red and light-coloured bricks. It could not recognise the black ones at all.
The team scrambled to gather new images and retrain the model in time. They made the deadline. But the lesson stuck.
"You get real-world data," al Khafaji said. "This is actually why it's great to do these deployments."
The company estimates it needs far more variety before it can scale confidently: different brick colours, different weather, different countries, different regulations.
What this means if you work in construction
Monumental does not show up and take over a site. It acts as a subcontractor, the same as a plumbing crew or a flooring team, except it sends robots instead of people. That keeps the handshake simple: whoever manages the site calls Monumental the same way they would call any other trade.
The catch, as any subcontractor knows, is dependencies. If the bricks do not arrive on time, the robots sit idle. Technology does not fix a supply chain.
For workers, the framing al Khafaji uses is worth noting: this is not automation replacing people who want jobs. It is automation filling roles that are not being filled at all.
Watch for: sites where bricklaying crew shortages are delaying your build. Robotic bricklaying is still in early pilot stages, but real commercial deployments are happening now in Western Europe.
