Google Pics puts AI image editing inside Docs, Slides and Drive

Google is putting an AI image editor directly inside the apps most offices already live in. The tool is called Google Pics. It arrives over the coming weeks for paying Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most Workspace business customers.

It runs on Nano Banana, Google's image generation and editing model, the kind of system that turns a written prompt into a picture and can adjust an existing one on request. You can use it on its own at pics.new, or inside the Google apps you already open every day.

What can it actually do?

Pics is built for editing, not just conjuring images from scratch. You point at a part of an image, type what you want changed, and the rest stays put.

Google calls the main trick object segmentation, which just means the tool can tell where one object ends and another begins. You can lift out a coffee cup, recolour a jacket, or swap a background without redrawing the whole picture. Several edits can run at once.

Text inside images can be edited or translated in place, keeping the original font and layout. That matters for anyone making posters, menus or slide decks in more than one language.

Each prompt returns several versions, so you pick the one you like rather than rerolling from zero. Files can be shared with colleagues who then edit the same image with you.

Why put it inside Docs, Slides and Drive?

Because that is where the images already live. Google says users touch billions of images across Workspace every month, and the pitch is simple: stop copying and pasting between tabs.

What does it mean for regular users?

If you pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra, or your employer runs a Workspace business plan, Pics will appear in your account without extra setup. Free personal Gmail users are not on the list at launch.

Small business owners get the most obvious win. A bakery owner making an Instagram post, a tutor building a worksheet, a real estate agent tidying a listing photo: all of that now happens inside the document, not in a separate design app.

A few practical notes worth keeping in mind.

AI-generated images can still get details wrong, especially hands, logos and fine text. Check anything before you send it to a client or print it. If you edit a photo of a real person or place, ask yourself whether the change could mislead someone. Google applies its usual content rules, but the responsibility for what you publish sits with you.

How it compares to the rest of the market
