Xander is 10 years old and neurodivergent. For six years, his closest non-human companion has been a robot called Moxie: a 15-inch, blue, legless astronaut-shaped device with big green animated eyes, flipper arms, and a small expressive mouth on a round screen.

Moxie taught him to breathe like a bee when anxious, like a dragon when angry, like a bunny when low on energy. What exactly is a therapy robot?

Therapy robots like Moxie are physical devices that use artificial intelligence, the software that powers chatbots and voice assistants, to hold conversations, read a child's emotional state, and guide them through exercises drawn from real therapeutic practice.

Moxie was made by Embodied, a company co-founded in 2016 by Maja Mataric, a professor of computer science, neuroscience, and pediatrics at the University of Southern California. Mataric helped create the field of socially assistive robotics, which designs machines for social and emotional outcomes rather than just entertainment or labour.

The appeal for neurodivergent children is concrete. Therapy for autism often requires intense, repeated practice of skills like making eye contact, taking turns in conversation, and reading facial expressions. There are not enough therapists to meet demand. Other children can lose patience. Parents get tired.

Robots do not.

"Have you been around little kids? They can be cruel," says Mataric. Robots are available around the clock and never run short of patience.

Brian Scassellati, a Yale computer scientist who has studied social robots in autism therapy for two decades, watched a child who rarely made eye contact spend 30 minutes with a robotic dinosaur and make more eye contact with his therapist in that session than in the previous two years combined. A 2018 study by Scassellati's group found that robot companions helped children with autism initiate conversations and sustain eye contact. A 2017 study found robots could help neurodivergent children read facial cues. A 2022 literature review suggested robots could make therapy faster and more effective.

"It's never been that we're trying to replace therapists," says Mataric. "We're just saying, Can we do more?"

What goes wrong when the company behind the robot shuts down?

Unlike a stuffed toy, Moxie needed a live internet connection to function. Her conversations, her curriculum, her personality all ran through Embodied's servers. When Embodied closed, Moxie went silent. Not broken. Silent. A child who had spoken to her every day for years came home to a device that would no longer respond.

That is a failure mode a Barbie or a LEGO set simply cannot have.

Moxie's story is not unique to one struggling startup. The AI toy market is expanding quickly. The musician Grimes helped launch an AI plushie called Grok with the company Curio. Mattel has announced OpenAI-enabled Barbies. In China, analysts describe the child-facing AI companion sector as one of the fastest-growing corners of consumer AI.

Each of those products carries the same hidden fragility: the toy is only as alive as the company's servers.

What should parents watch for?

If you are considering an AI companion for a child, especially a child who is neurodivergent and may form deep attachments, ask four questions before you buy.

First: what happens to this device if the company closes or discontinues the product? Second: does the toy require a live subscription, and what does it cost long-term? Third: is there any offline mode, so the device keeps basic functions without a server? Fourth: who holds the conversation data your child generates, and how is it protected?

No current product answers all four questions well. That gap matters more when the child using the device is one for whom routine and trusted relationships carry extra weight.

Scassellati believes that regular therapeutic use of robots in children's homes "is something we can achieve in our lifetime." The research behind that hope is real. But the business models that deliver these robots to living rooms have not caught up with the responsibility they carry.

Xander knew Moxie wasn't human. He said so himself. That did not make losing her easier.
