John Deere Gives Farmers an AI Chatbot That Knows Their Own Fields

For generations, farmers kept track of their fields on paper ledgers and later on spreadsheets. Making sense of all that data depended heavily on whether a given farmer had a head for numbers. John Deere wants to change that.
The company has launched a tool called JD, a conversational AI assistant, meaning software you talk to in plain English rather than clicking through menus, built into its free Operations Center farm-management platform. The idea is simple: instead of hunting through multiple dashboards, a farmer types a question and gets an answer drawn from years of their own field records.
What can farmers actually ask it?
The questions JD can handle are practical and rooted in the day-to-day economics of farming. A farmer might ask how their fuel use during soil preparation this year compares with the past three years, or which of their fields produced the best yields relative to how seeds were planted. They could ask which operator on their crew is covering the most ground per hour, or when historical patterns suggest the best time to bring in the harvest.
Those are not abstract data exercises. Each question can point to real money saved or made.
The tool does not connect to any outside data or other farms' records. It works only on the historical records that farm has generated through its own equipment and Operations Center account.
Who pays for it?
Nothing. Operations Center has always been free, and JD is free too. John Deere also does not charge for the modem connections on equipped machines that feed data into the platform. The company said early access begins this autumn, with a broader rollout over the following year.
John Deere, which is based in Moline, Illinois, has been tracking large language models, the AI technology that powers text-based chatbots like ChatGPT, for about three years, according to Melissa Neuendorf, the company's principal product manager for customer AI solutions, who spoke with The Robot Report. She said most farmers "don't even know what an LLM is, nor do they care," and that Deere's job is to hide that complexity entirely.
The company's chief technology officer, Jahmy Hindman, put an emphasis on trust at the launch, pointing to a partnership with Iowa State University for independent testing with real farmers on real farms.
Deere has not disclosed which specific AI model runs underneath JD, saying the pace of change in the field means it wants the flexibility to switch models without making a public announcement each time.
Should farmers worry about their data?
Deere has been direct: farm data belongs to the farmer, not to John Deere. Each farm's data stays separate. The company says it does not use one farm's records to answer questions for another.
That is the stated policy. Farmers who want to read the specifics should check their Operations Center account terms before they start using JD, particularly around how data is stored in the cloud and what happens if they later cancel the service.
Watch for: Any farm-data tool, from any company, that is vague about whether your records are used to train AI models or shared across customers. Ask the question directly before you connect your equipment.
