Key points

  • OpenAI launched ads inside ChatGPT for free and Go-tier users in India on or around 17 July 2026.
  • The rollout starts with 50 brands and involves partnerships with advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom.
  • A self-serve ad manager, where businesses can run their own campaigns, arrives next month with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 (about $7.60).
  • OpenAI reported $6.7 billion in revenue for the second quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion the previous quarter.
  • OpenAI said in February 2026 that it has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users in India.

If you use ChatGPT in India without paying for a premium plan, expect to start seeing advertisements when you chat with the AI assistant.

OpenAI confirmed this week that it is bringing ads to its free and Go subscription tiers in India. The Go plan, which launched at under $5 a month in August 2025, sits below the paid Plus and Pro plans that still carry no ads.

What will the ads actually look like?

OpenAI has not published full screenshots, but the company says ads will appear at moments when users are considering a decision. Think: you ask ChatGPT where to buy running shoes and a brand appears in the answer.

The rollout begins with 50 brands, and OpenAI has signed up two of the world's biggest advertising groups, WPP and Omnicom, to help fill that inventory. Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, said the goal is for "businesses of every size" to reach users "at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape."

Next month, OpenAI plans to open an ad manager, a self-service dashboard where any marketer can build a campaign, as long as they commit to spending at least ₹725 (roughly $7.60) per day.

Why India first?

India is OpenAI's biggest single-country audience. The company counted more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users there as of February 2026, a large portion of whom are on the free or Go tiers.

OpenAI has spent heavily to build that base: a discounted Go plan, a promotion that made the tier free for a full year, cricket sponsorships during the Women's Premier League and the Indian Premier League, and the recent hire of Uber India's former chief to lead expansion.

Ads followed a similar geographic path elsewhere. OpenAI began showing them to US users in February 2026, then extended the programme to Europe earlier this month, first reported by TechCrunch AI.

Why is OpenAI doing this now?

Money. OpenAI is preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO), the process of selling shares to the public for the first time, expected either this year or next. Investors want predictable, growing revenue before that happens.

The numbers are already moving. OpenAI recorded $6.7 billion in revenue in the quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion the previous quarter. A separate report from late 2025 said the company was targeting 220 million paying subscribers by 2030; at that point it had 35 million.

Ads give OpenAI a way to earn money from the hundreds of millions of users who have never paid a cent.

What does this mean for users?

If you are on a free or Go plan in India, ads are coming. If you want an ad-free experience, upgrading to a Plus or Pro plan is currently the only stated alternative. Paid users on those tiers appear unaffected for now.
