Teradyne Robotics Files Patent Lawsuit Against JAKA Robotics in Europe
The maker of Universal Robots cobot arms is taking its Chinese rival to a European court over three patents covering robot joints and user interfaces. Here is what is at stake.

The world's biggest maker of collaborative robot arms, the kind of compact, flexible machines that work alongside people on factory floors, has sued a fast-growing Chinese rival in a European court.
Teradyne Robotics A/S, parent company of Universal Robots, filed the case, numbered UPC-CFI-0003057/2026, at the Unified Patent Court's Copenhagen division. The UPC is a relatively new pan-European court, launched in 2023, that lets a patent holder sue across multiple countries with a single filing rather than fighting the same battle in each nation separately.
What exactly is Teradyne claiming?
The suit targets JAKA Robotics GmbH, the German subsidiary of JAKA, and covers both hardware and software across a broad range of JAKA's European cobot sales.
Three patents are at the centre of the case:

All three patents are assigned to Universal Robots and carry a March 2006 priority date, meaning Universal Robots was developing and protecting this technology two decades ago. Teradyne has not yet publicly stated which specific JAKA models it believes cross the line on which patents.
What does JAKA say?
JAKA pushed back hard. After Teradyne publicly announced the lawsuit on Aug. 27, JAKA said it had received no official notification from the court or from Teradyne. On Sept. 3 the company issued a statement saying its legal advisers had confirmed no proceedings appeared to be open as of Sept. 2.
The discrepancy is probably procedural. Filing a case with a court and formally serving the defendant are two separate steps, and a gap of days or even weeks between them is not unusual.
JAKA also pointed to two previous Freedom-to-Operate analyses, legal reviews a company commissions to check whether its products could infringe existing patents, which it says found no potential infringement involving Universal Robots technology.
Why does this matter beyond two robot companies arguing?
This is the second time in 2026 that Teradyne has sued a Chinese robotics firm in Europe. In February it filed a copyright case against Elite Robots' German subsidiary.
For businesses buying cobots in Europe, that pattern is worth watching. If Teradyne wins injunctions, the selection of competitively priced Chinese robot arms available in Europe could shrink.
First reported by The Robot Report, the case docket currently lists 128 documents, but the detailed filings are not yet public.
Honest takeaway: If your business is evaluating cobot suppliers, ask any vendor for their Freedom-to-Operate documentation before you commit to a platform. A cheap machine that gets pulled from the market mid-contract is not a bargain.
