Listen Labs walked away from a $1.5 billion funding round because Salesforce may want to buy it

The three-year-old startup that uses AI to run customer interviews ditched a signed deal with investors, a rare move, while acquisition talks with Salesforce are under way.

Key points

  • Listen Labs signed, then abandoned, a term sheet for a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation led by Menlo Ventures.
  • Salesforce has held talks to acquire Listen Labs for around $2 billion, though no deal has been finalised.
  • Listen Labs earns roughly $30 million in annualised revenue, three times more than its closest rival, Simile.
  • The startup was last valued at $500 million after a $69 million Series B in January 2025 led by Ribbit Capital.
  • If the Salesforce deal falls through, investors expect Listen Labs to seek a valuation of $2 billion or more.

What does Listen Labs actually do?

It runs customer research, automatically. Big companies normally pay human researchers to write survey questions, interview customers by phone or video, and then turn all of that into slide decks. That process takes weeks and costs a lot. Listen Labs replaces most of it with AI, an artificial intelligence system that writes the questions, conducts the interviews over audio or video, and spits out the finished report.

Clients include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic and Sweetgreen. The startup was co-founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann, a former German national champion in competitive programming (writing code competitively, as a sport), and Alfred Wahlforss, who previously built a staffing startup. They met doing master's degrees at Harvard.

Why did it walk away from $125 million?

Signing a term sheet (a written agreement on investment terms) and then walking away from it is genuinely unusual in venture capital circles. Listen Labs apparently did exactly that, ditching a signed deal with Menlo Ventures, because acquisition talks with Salesforce, the giant customer-relationship software company, appear to be further along and worth more money.

TechCrunch first reported that Salesforce has been in discussions to buy Listen Labs for around $2 billion. Nothing is signed there either, and the talks could still collapse.

If they do, Listen Labs has a decent fallback. Several investors told TechCrunch they expect the startup to return to fundraising and target a valuation of $2 billion or higher, partly because a rival startup, Simile, closed a $200 million round at a $2 billion valuation in late July 2025.

What would Salesforce get out of this?

Salesforce sells software that helps businesses manage their relationships with customers. Owning a tool that interviews those customers automatically and tells you what they think is an obvious fit.

The sticking point is price. At $2 billion and $30 million in annual revenue, someone is paying roughly 67 times what Listen Labs currently earns each year. One person with experience in Salesforce acquisitions told TechCrunch that the multiple might simply be too high for the deal to close.

Milestone Detail
Founded 2023
Series B (Jan 2025) $69 million, valuation $500 million, led by Ribbit Capital
Series C term sheet $125 million at $1.5 billion, Menlo Ventures (abandoned)
Salesforce talks ~$2 billion acquisition price (unconfirmed)
Annual revenue ~$30 million

What does this mean for ordinary people?

If you have ever filled in a customer survey or sat through a research interview, this technology is aimed squarely at replacing that experience with an AI voice. Whether that makes the experience better or worse for participants is still an open question, but it is already happening at some of the world's biggest companies.
