Nvidia's DLSS 5 Is Here, But Almost No Games Support It Yet

Nvidia's DLSS 5 is now officially available, and the launch is narrower than almost anyone expected. One game. One launch title. That is it.
DLSS, which stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, is Nvidia's technology for using AI to improve how games look and run. Version 5 is the most ambitious step yet: instead of simply sharpening a lower-resolution image, it analyses a scene and adds detail that was never actually rendered, things like richer shadows, more convincing textures, and more realistic-looking surfaces.
Nvidia called it "the company's most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018." Ray tracing is a technique that simulates how light bounces naturally off surfaces, giving games more lifelike lighting.
What went wrong with the launch announcement?
The March reveal did not go smoothly. Demo images Nvidia shared showed characters whose faces and skin had been noticeably transformed by the AI processing, sometimes in ways that looked artificial or oddly smoothed-out. One image, of a character from Resident Evil Requiem, was widely shared and mocked as a "yassification," a slang term for making a face look exaggeratedly glamorous.
Nvidia stressed that developers would have fine-grained controls over how strongly DLSS 5 alters any part of a scene. They can turn the effect up on food, foliage, or silverware while leaving character faces entirely untouched.
In a press briefing ahead of the NBA 2K27 launch, the results looked less extreme than the March demos. Players looked more realistic rather than AI-altered, which is encouraging. But we have not run our own independent test on an official build yet, so that is still a company-controlled preview.
Does it cost you performance?
Yes, significantly. Nvidia puts the performance cost at 50 to 60 percent, meaning your graphics card works much harder. The company counters that by pairing DLSS 5 with frame generation, a separate tool that creates additional frames using AI so the game still feels smooth.
To play NBA 2K27 at 1080p with everything enabled on a mid-range RTX 5060 card, you need one of the fastest gaming processors currently available and must switch on 6x frame generation. That means only one in every six frames you actually see was genuinely rendered by the game. The rest were filled in by AI.
An unofficial DLSS 5 mod tested by The Verge in an older game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, cut performance roughly in half, which lines up with Nvidia's own figures.
What does this mean for players?
If you own an RTX 50-series card and play NBA 2K27, you can try DLSS 5 from day one. Everyone else is waiting.
Games that Nvidia showed alongside DLSS 5 in March, including EA Sports FC, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy, have no announced release date for the feature. Nvidia did not answer questions about the timeline for any of them.
