These executives, who are responsible for safeguarding a company's digital assets and data, are feeling the heat from rapid AI advancements and increased legal liabilities. Half of the surveyed CISOs indicated that the pressure from advanced AI models, such as Anthropic’s Mythos, has made them consider leaving their roles.
Why are CISOs considering leaving?
The pressure to implement AI faster than it can be safely managed is straining CISOs. Sixty percent of them report that their boards are pushing harder for AI adoption than their organizations can handle. This rapid pace, coupled with the risk of personal legal liability if data breaches occur, is driving many to reconsider their career paths. A year ago, 56% worried about personal liability; today, that figure has jumped to 78%.

Experienced CISOs leaving their roles can lead to security gaps. Companies often fill these positions with less experienced candidates, leaving a temporary void in leadership. Omar Khawaja of Carnegie Mellon University advises starting with AI in lower-risk roles, such as anomaly detection, before automating responses to sophisticated threats. Despite the challenges, some security leaders remain motivated by the evolving field, provided they have strong executive backing.
